Example and tips

Example

Fictional example: a 40 x 30 x 20 cm box weighing 3 kg has a dimensional weight of 24,000 / 5,000 = 4.8 kg, so it is billed on 4.8 kg. Repacked in a 30 x 25 x 15 cm box, its dimensional weight falls to 2.25 kg and the parcel is billed on its actual 3 kg.

Tips
  • Measure the packed box, not the product: carriers bill the outer dimensions and round the result up.
  • Compare dimensional and actual weight: when the dimensional weight is higher, a smaller box lowers the bill.
  • Turn the estimate into your Shopify shipping rates or free shipping threshold, then check the carrier's real rates for your zones.

How it works

Estimate a parcel's shipping cost from weight and size: dimensional weight, billable weight, insurance and four simulated service levels for Shopify stores.

  1. 1

    1) Enter weight and dimensions

Choose imperial (in, lb) or metric (cm, kg), then enter the total weight of the packed parcel and its length, width and height.

  2. 2

    2) Add a declared value

Optional: enter the value of the contents to add insurance, estimated at 1.5% of that value. The origin and destination postal codes are optional and do not change this estimate.

  3. 3

    3) Compare the estimates

Click Get Shipping Quotes to see four simulated service levels, from Economy Ground (7 to 10 business days) to Overnight Priority (1 business day), priced on the billable weight.

Frequently asked questions

How does this shipping calculator work?

It converts your measurements to centimeters and kilograms, computes the dimensional weight (length x width x height in cm, divided by 5,000) and keeps the greater of the actual and dimensional weight as the billable weight. Each of the four simulated service levels then adds a rate per kilogram to a base fee, and insurance adds 1.5% of the declared value.

What is dimensional weight and how do carriers calculate it?

Dimensional (or volumetric) weight is a weight based on the size of the box: carriers charge the greater of the actual weight and the dimensional weight. On their own pages, read on October 24, 2026, UPS divides length x width x height in inches by 139 for Daily Rates and 166 for Retail Rates in the US, and divides centimeters by 5,000 in France. FedEx divides inches by 139, DHL Express uses 5,000 for centimeters and 139 for inches, and USPS applies dimensional weight to parcels over 1 cubic foot, dividing by 139 since July 12, 2026. Carriers also round up, so their billable weight can be slightly higher than this estimate.

Are these real UPS, FedEx or USPS rates?

No. The four service levels are simulated with standard formulas: they do not come from a carrier, and the postal codes you enter do not change the result. A real price also depends on the zone or destination, fuel and remote area surcharges, duties and taxes, and the rates you negotiated. Use the estimate to compare box sizes and budget your shipping, then check the carrier's own rates.

How do I calculate shipping rates in Shopify?

In Shopify, you set shipping rates by shipping zone. According to Shopify's Help Center, read on October 24, 2026, carrier-calculated rates show rates from carriers such as UPS, FedEx or USPS at checkout, based on the order's weight, dimensions and destination, and Shopify's built-in carrier-calculated rates (USPS, DHL and UPS in the United States) are available on all plans. Third-party carrier-calculated shipping is available on the Advanced and Plus plans; Grow stores can add it for a monthly fee or by switching to annual billing.

How do I set a free shipping threshold on Shopify?

Shopify lets you add a free shipping rate with a minimum order amount: with a $50 minimum, the example its Help Center uses, orders of $50 or more ship free. You can also use price-based rates that change with the order value. Take your average shipping cost from this calculator, then set the threshold high enough that absorbing it still leaves the margin you want.

Can I use both metric and imperial units?

Yes. Pick Imperial (inches, pounds) or Metric (centimeters, kilograms) in the Units menu: the calculator converts everything to centimeters and kilograms before it computes the dimensional weight.

How can WhatsApp help when shipping costs make shoppers hesitate?

Show shipping costs early, before checkout. When a shopper still leaves at checkout, an abandoned cart reminder on WhatsApp can bring them back, and shipping notifications keep buyers informed once the parcel leaves. Kanal, the WhatsApp marketing app for Shopify, sends both.
